Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 14.8.17 2017-08-15 15:47:00

Castlelyons drop out of Junior “A” Football Championship.

Castlelyons 1-13 Erins Own 1-10

Despite putting in a good hour’s football against Erins Own in the East Cork Junior A Football semi-final last Friday evening we failed to close out the game losing by just three points in the end. Ballynoe Pitch was in great condition and referee Ger Scully, who incidentally did our PIHC game versus Fr O Neills, did a good job on the whistle.

We set up very well and playing with the wind towards Morley’s Cross within two minutes we had the ball in the net as Robbie gave in a great pass to Alan Fenton who does not miss these ones as he the net with a screamer. Then back came Erins Own as Stephen Lee 0-1 free and Mark Collins had 0-1 from play. We came back again as Aidan O Sullivan set up Michael Spillane for 0-1 and Eoin Maye had 0-1. We did have another chance of a score as Ciarán McGann was fouled and Mike Spillane took the free but it hit off the upright and Erins own back managed to clear it down field for another 0-1 by Lee to them and they had 0-1 from play but on 15 minutes Mike Spillane pointed a free as he was fouled himself. Moving into the second quarter we were 1-3 to 0-4 ahead and playing well but then Erins Own scored a fortuitous goal after a mix up in our own square. However, a lot of our lads were playing well especially Colm Barry and Darragh Lawlor and we went on to register four more points through Mike Spillane 0-2 from frees with Alan and Ronan Fenton 0-1 each while Erins Own scored just one more to leave us ahead 1-7 to 0-5 at half time.

Erins Own started the second half strong and had 0-1 from a free but then Ronan Fenton tagged on 0-1 for us from play. Mossy Carroll had 0-1 for them from play and we had a period of dominance but little reward. However, on one occasion Ciarán was going through but taken down and Mike Spillane put the resultant free over for 0-1. Then Erins Own applied massive pressure and on three occasions Stephen Hickey made massive saves and their only reward was 0-1 from a ’45. We did manage another score as Tom Carroll was fouled and Ronan Fenton clipped over the free. However, at this stage a fitter Erins Own backed up by a strong bench got on top and again Stephen Hickey came to our rescue with two massive saves but they scored a further 0-3 to close out the game for victory on the score 1-13 to 1-10.

Well this is the end of the championships for 2017 for our two top adult teams in hurling and football. It was a one in which our lads applied themselves so well early on by setting up a fine Gym and designing the Club Gear. Then come the big battles and it got so tough. We lost our two hurling championship games but were gallant in defeat especially in the Fr O Neills’ game as we made a mighty come back. We did show promise in the football championship with a great win over a strong Aghada side. However, we played Erin’s Own missing four of that team as Anthony Spillane and Darren Tobin were both injured with Cian O Leary and Ronan Bransfield both unavailable. Furthermore, we were missing Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy both powerful footballers who were engaged with Cork seniors and minors. Erins Own fielded 12 of their senior hurlers and are still in the championship wearing us down with their level of fitness. Considering those injured and unavailable this was a mighty display by the lads as they gave it everything last Friday evening. We must, of course, finish out the year as strong as we can as we still have both leagues in hurling and football and the Abernethy Cup in Hurling and hopefully we can go all the way in junior B hurling. Thanks to Donal O Leary, manager, with James Moroney and Maurice Carroll, selectors and Jacinta O Leary on the First-Aid have given a lot to the football in the last two years and hopefully will make the breakthrough next season.

Team: - Stephen Hickey, Brian Carroll, Declan Varner, Shane Fenton, Eoin Maye, Tom Carroll, Aidan O Sullivan, Colm Barry, Shane Moroney, Darragh Lawlor, Ciarán McGann, Alan Fenton, Robbie Feeney, Ronan Fenton, Michael Spillane. Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy get plenty action in Croke Park.

Our two latest clubmen representing the Rebels saw plenty of action in Croke Park in the All-Ireland hurling semi-finals in Croker last Sunday. Colm faced the Déise and in a titanic struggle these lads wore down the Rebels who had to endure a possible gamechanger in the Damien Cahalane red card. However, let’s not take from the Déise as these boys have suffered many disappointments in the past but their dedication, power levels and application to a genuine plan must be admired as they are now just a step from final glory. Cork have that futuristic look about them and with our own Colm Spillane will undoubtedly have their day too. Well done Colm you have done yourself, family and our club proud this year. Barry Murphy once again saw game time as the Cork minors continued their march to All Ireland glory by defeating a strong Dublin outfit. They now take on Galway in the final and what a game that should be as both teams are very highly rated. Again, this is a tremendous honour for Barry, his family and our Club and it shows the benefits of having a strong Juvenile set up as we have had our fair share of minors down the years wearing the red jersey.

Castlelyons U21 Hurlers Play Carrigtwohill in East Cork Semi Final this Friday.

Castlelyons play Carrigtwohill in the East Cork U21 “A” semi-final this Friday evening with in Dungourney at 7. 15pm with Arthur Murphy on the whistle. We had a very good victory over Youghal the quarter final of this competition and showed a lot of promise. However, Carrigtwohill equally had a strong victory over an up and coming St Catherines side. They have strong players in Cork U21 Darren O Driscoll, Cork minor Star Aaron Barry Walsh, their captain Shane Murphy and are generally a strong outfit. In fact, these boys are put forward as this year’s favourites to win it out. However, Castlelyons have enjoyed a few strong years at minor level and with players like last year’s county minor captain Niall O Leary, his brother Jamie, county minor Barry Murphy, Pierse Varner and Jack Barry together with a strong panel we must be in with a right chance of making an impression at Under 21 level again this year. We may be minus Keith O Leary who was the result of a harsh sending off the last day but we are not aware of an appeal or the result to date. No doubt, James Maye, Donal Barry and Larry Murphy with coaches Colm Barry and Darren Tobin will have the lads in top shape for this one and we wish them luck. Incidentally, Bride Rovers play Watergrasshill in the other semi-final also on this weekend.

Castlelyons Team Panel: - John Paul Murphy, Peter Roche, Declan Varner, Redmond Walsh, Conor McCarthy, Niall O Leary, Shane Fenton, Keith O Leary, Jamie O Leary, Dave Morrison, Barry Murphy, Jack Barry, Ian O Riordan, Mark Spillane, Shane Moroney, Andrew O Neill, Seamus Moroney, Micheal Geary, Pierse Varner, Jack Ronayne, Alex Henley, Mark Henley, Barry Murphy.

East Cork Oil JAHC Semi-Final in Castlelyons this Sunday.

Well it’s St Catherines versus Lisgoold in the East Cork Oil Junior “A” Hurling Semi Final in Castlelyons in Páirc an Athar Uí Laoghaire on this Sunday at 2pm and this has all the ingredients of the proverbial cracker. Both teams fought it out in the earlier round also in Castlelyons with Catherines taken the spoils in extra time. However, that evening former Cork and Imokilly star John Cronin suffered injury and it effected Lisgoold somewhat as he had to come off. So now they have a chance to prove themselves again with a full outfit but you can be sure Catherines will not die easily. We would appreciate all possible members for stewarding on the day as a big attendance is likely.

Castlelyons Carnival 2017 going well and looking forward to a bumper weekend.

Castlelyons Carnival 2017 is going well and into the second weekend. Red Hurley and Castlelyons Gospel choir are in concert this Wednesday night with Jimmy Buckley on Thursday night. On the Friday evening, there is a school reunion for past pupils of both the old and new schools and hopefully ex pupils of all ages and from around the globe will enjoy the craic of the Carnival. Then on Saturday night there is a BBQ with Black Rose providing the music and song. Finally, on Sunday there is a family fun day with a “Taste of Cork and Waterford Food and Craft Fair”. This is a most ambitious and a magnificent programme of entertainment so Castlelyons is the place to be for the weekend.
