Castlelyons prepare for East Cork Semi-Final of Junior A Football Championship.

Castlelyons 2-11 Glanmire `1-6

Castlelyons continued their preparations for the East Cork junior football semi-final versus Erins Own with a reasonable win over Glanmire in the league last Wednesday. Glanmire who were defeated comprehensively in the JBFC by both Russell Rovers and Cobh did put up strong opposition and in fact were level with us five minutes into the second half. Nevertheless, this was an improvement on the Grange game and the recent bit of football action is helping us. Glanmire were first to score 0-1 but we went on to dominate the first half as R Fenton 0-2, Alan Fenton 0-1, Tom Carroll 0-1, Robbie Feeney 0-1 and Ciaran McGann 0-1 all chipped in with scores. We led 06 to 0-3 at half time.

In the second half Glanmire up their game and we traded points with them as Alan Fenton and Mike Spillane hade 0-1 apiece for us but then Ronan Kearney scored a good goal for them to draw level seven minutes into the second half. However, we went on to take control of the game and both Mike Spillane and Jack Barry had goals with Jack Barry, Tom Carroll and Colm Barry adding points as we finished strongly.

Of course, we started the week with a challenge match versus Grange at home on Tuesday evening and got a little lesson on the finer arts of the game. We suffered a four-point defeat in a high scoring game. Admittedly, we were down a few and it was our first game with a while but we were rusty. A feature of this game came from Alan McNamara, originally from Kerry, who treated us to a scoring lesson as he kicked points freely off left and right. So, it was great to see an improvement from this Grange game and hopefully we will be in the zone for next week’s championship semi-final.

Team: - Shane Hickey, Brian Carroll, Declan Varner, Shane Fenton, Eoin Maye, Tom Carroll, Aidan O Sullivan, Colm Barry, Liam Moroney, Darragh Lawlor, Ciarán McGann, Alan Fenton, Robbie Feeney, Ronan Fenton, Michael Spillane. Subs: - Brian Donovan, Colm O Neill, Andrew O Neill, Michael Geary, Jack Barry, Dave Beausang (all subs got game time and done well).

East Cork J“A”FC Castlelyons v Erins Own at Ballynoe on Friday 11.7.17 at 8pm

Well it’s all roads to Ballynoe for the Semi Final of the Championship on this Friday Evening in Ballynoe versus Erins Own at 8pm. We will have to be at our very best to take these boys as they are a strong side with a lot of good footballers and have put up some strong scores this year both in the league and championship especially a comprehensive win over Cloyne who operated at Intermediate level a short time ago. Cormac Dooley at full back, Kieran Murphy at midfield and Stephen Lee in the forwards are men that would grace any senior team and are all hardy boys. However, we reached the final last year and played a good brand of football and if we can come up to that level on Friday evening we will be in with a right chance of making the final again. It is interesting from our perspective that we are prepared to play this game without possibly our two county men Colm Spillane and minor Barry Murphy as both are excellent footballers. However, both lads are preparing for the games of their lives with Cork and we wish them the very best. I see so many games going off to facilitate county players it would be nice to await their availability too but fair play to our Club for driving on. So, calling for all possible support for our lads in Ballynoe on this Friday. Best of luck to the team, panel and managements.

Castlelyons men ready for Croke Park on Sunday.

We have had many Castlelyons men represent the Parish and Cork in Croke Park down through the years. One day we had two in the minor All Ireland Final and another day we had two in the senior All Ireland Final but this is the first time we have had men on the senior and minor panels the one day. Colm Spillane is ready to start at corner back for the Rebels who face the Déise in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-Final while Barry Murphy is on the Minor Panel who play Dublin also on Sunday. This is a great honour for the lads, their families and our Club. Colm is hurling out of his skin this year and shoring up ball along the full back line as the Cork senior team have really raised their game. Barry has been somewhat unlucky with injury this year but has made a great comeback and came on as a substitute in the last two games to do mighty and could well start on Sunday. Surely it will be a question of last out close the door as all Castlelyons head for Croker in support of the lads and the Rebels on Sunday but please ensure to have a few at home and keep a watch locally too. So best of luck Colm and Barry, Rebels Abú.

Abernethy Cup Hurling

The Abernethy Cup for East Cork Intermediate teams are now at semi-final stage as Fr O Neills play Sarsfields on Wednesday evening 9th August at Castlemartyr and Castlelyons play Cloyne in the other semi-final on a date to be arranged. This competition has been a great success this year and hopefully our lads will play Cloyne soon and keep up the momentum.

Junior B Hurling.

Our Junior B team are going well this year with two wins in the Championship to date and are now down to play Aghada in the quarter final. This game is due to be played on the weekend of the 27th August and we must get in some games and training before then. We are mid table in the League on 6 Points with four games played and one team conceded points to us. The League is led by Bride Rovers on 12 points after six games. We could still make the final of this League but first we must play our games and attempt to gain maximum points. Well done to our panel and management to date as we are in the running for both League and Championship and now is the time to get in the hurling and close these games out with wins.

Congrats to the Rebels on winning the inaugural All Ireland U17 championship.

Our Under 17 hurlers the first of three Cork teams to hit Croke Park this year had a historic victory as they defeated Dublin in the inaugural All Ireland U17 Final on Sunday. This was a tough game and Cork done well to take the title. Both Cork and Dublin face each other again next Sunday in the All-Ireland Minor Semi Final with a number of the U17’s on board again. Congrats to the Rebels and the lads from East Cork especially our neighbours Eoin and Brian Roche from Bride Rovers who lifted the trophy as joint captains and what club and county men they are as they played in Thurles against Galway in the U17 semi-final on Wednesday, the East Cork U21 Qr final with Rovers on Saturday, the county minor championship with Rovers again on Monday and then the big one in Croke Park on Sunday.

Cork GAA Clubs Draw.

Congratulations to Michael and Noreen Spillane, Ballyoran who were recent winners of €1,000 cash in the Cork GAA Clubs July Draw. This draw has been very good to our Club down the years as we have won all types of prizes from a car, holidays, computers and several big money packs. Thanks to our club members who canvas for the Draw and especially to John Barrett our former Chairman who co-ordinates the lot since the Cork Club Draw started back in 1992. We as a Club get guaranteed 45% return on each ticket sold in addition to the great prizes on offer, and, indeed, it has been a nice source of fundraising for us so well done to all.

Preparations ongoing for Castlelyons Carnival 2017.

Well Castlelyons Carnival 2017 starts this Thursday with a Country and Western night to the music and singing of Michael English. This is one of some huge Bands also in the Fr Ferris Field Marquee during the Carnival as Flash Harry, Red Hurley and the Castlelyons Gospel Choir are providing some other big evenings. There is a Teenage Disco for the 13 to 16-year olds and no doubt this will be another major attraction. As part of the Carnival the Friday evening will be devoted to a school reunion for past pupils. While there was already a 50th Anniversary of the new school this is a reunion of both the old and new schools and hopefully ex pupils of all ages and from around the globe will enjoy the craic of the Carnival. There is a Carnival 17 Raffle with all for two the dominant feature as there are three prizes of holiday for two worth €1,000, a hotel break for two and a meal for two all for just €2 per ticket. Dates and times of some great entertainment and fun at this Festival is posted at crossroads about the Parish and on local and social media. The Festival is being arranged by a sub group of the village Community Council and they require all possible assistance to help make it a success so get cracking by helping, attending, spending and you will enjoy a great ten days.

Vote of sympathy.

Our Club wishes to extend sincere sympathy to the Leahy family, Ballyhooly, on the death of Philip who passed away peacefully at Maryland General Hospital, USA after a tragic accident. Philip, a student, was well known to so many in Castlelyons. We remember him in our prayers together with his family, friends and fellow Castlelyons students in CIT during this time of inexpressible grief. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm dílis.
