Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 31.7.17 2017-08-02 13:07:00

Under 21 hurlers advance in Championship.

Castlelyons 5-15 Youghal 2-16

Castlelyons U21 hurlers took care of a Youghal side in this East Cork A quarter final at Ballynoe on Sunday evening. However, there was some nice touches from both sides and it was a reasonably good game overall. We were down our county minor star, Barry Murphy, from the start due to injury and he was a loss. We choose to play with a slight wind into the Morley’s Cross direction in the first half and started well as Jack Barry 0-1 and David Morrison had 0-2 for us. Then a high ball into our square led to a penalty. Our goalie John Paul Murphy faced up to their senior player Darragh O Connell and made a mighty save to his right which really gave us heart. We went up field and Shane Moroney added 0-2 while David Morrison showed well to knock in a mistake by their goalie for a super goal. Moving into the second quarter we were 1-7 to 1-2 ahead. The full forward line was beavering away and Andrew O Neill and Mark Spillane were picking up breaks from Jack Barry who was causing joint problems for the Youghal defence and touched down a nice one to Mark Spillane who banged in an opportunist goal.

However, this was followed by serious pressure from Youghal as they scored 0-2 and missed a lot of scores. Our backs done very well getting in hooks and blocks as Peter Roche, Declan Varner, and Redmond Walsh were to the task in the full back line. Then the siege was lifted and we broke with purpose as Jamie O leary sent in a high one to Jack Barry and he fielded mighty and shot but Youghal goalie did well to save. We lost one of our players to a red card for what certainly appeared to many as an innocuous collision with a Youghal player. This incident coupled with a rough and nasty hand injury to our own Shane Moroney, had an upsetting effect on us for a while. Youghal went on to score 0-3 but Shane Moroney 0-1 and especially Niall O Leary sent 0-2, one a monster of a free, to steady the ship. Indeed, our half back line of Niall in the centre and his two wings Shane Fenton and young Conor McCarthy defended very well and closing out the first half to help us to lead 2-10 to 1-8.

We started the second half with the determined Shane Moroney back in despite a very nasty hand injury but, of course, we were down to 14 men. Moroney moved in on a high ball which the goalie dropped and he was on hand to bang in 1-0 for a great start to the second half. But Youghal came back at us and had 1-1 and there was some mighty hurling around the centre as Youghal’s lively Peter Cody and our own Jamie O Leary had a battle royal for supremacy. But Jamie is made of stern stuff and with good help from David Morrison and Ian O Riordan who dropped back to assist he got on top despite down his midfield colleague. Niall O Leary had 0-2 and David Morrison had 0-1. Shane Moroney struck again for another goal as the sliotar came off the goalie to put us 4-13 to 2-12 with just fifteen minutes to go. Youghal tacked on a few scores but Niall O Leary turned on the class with a massive run through the centre and a mighty finish for 1-0. Jack Barry and Seamus Moroney closed out our scoring with 0-1 apiece to give us victory of 5-15 to 2-16 as referee James Bermingham blew the long whistle.

Well done to management team of Donal Barry, James Maye and Larry Murphy who set up the team well and having advice from Colm Barry and Darren Tobin on the line paid dividends too. We are now in the semi-final of this competition with Bride Rovers, Carrigtwohill and Watergrasshill. We must go hard in training as we were a little rusty and there is room for improvement. We can do the business with full commitment by applying the gel to head and body but nothing less will do and it will be worth it. Incidentally, we supplied the Umpires to referee James Bermingham for the game Pat O Neill, Bill O Sullivan, Maurice Carroll and Nicole Barry. Thanks to the lads and especially to Nicole as it’s great to have a lady officiating at a game.

Scores: - Shane Moroney 2-3, Niall O Leary 1-4, David Morrison 1-3, Mark Spillane 1-0, Jack Barry 0-2, Keith O Leary 0-1, Seamus Moroney 0-1, Keith O Leary 0-1

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Peter Roche, Declan Varner, Redmond Walsh, Conor McCarthy, Niall O Leary, Shane Fenton, Keith O Leary, Jamie O Leary, Dave Morrison, Jack Barry, Ian O Riordan, Mark Spillane, Shane Moroney, Andrew O Neill. Subs: - Seamus Moroney, Micheal Geary, Pierse Varner, Jack Ronayne, Alex Henley, Mark Henley, Barry Murphy (almost all our subs got game time and done well)

Hosting Games in Páirc An tAthair Peadar Uí Laoghaire.

The interest in games is good and strong again this year with Cork heading for All Irelands in U17, Minor and Senior hurling and we have got our share of good games to date. Last Saturday evening we hosted the quarter final of the East Cork U21 hurling between Aghada and Bride Rover and were treated to a feast of hurling as John Looney of last year’s county minor crop banged in 2-14 for Aghada and the Roche twins of the current U17 and Minor county teams starred for the Rovers. Formers Cork legends Conor Counihan, Aghada and Brian Murphy, Rovers were active on the line for their teams too. Now Rovers looked a strong side as they went on to win 3-19 to 3-17. Well done to those involved in arrangements as our pitch was in pristine condition and there was a lovely programme available.

Footballers prepare for the Championship.

Our footballers are preparing for the semi-final of the East Cork Junior “A” Championship versus Erin’s Own which takes place on Friday the 11th August. Donal O Leary, Maurice Carroll and James Moroney are setting out the training and some challenge games. Again, hopefully the lads will give their total commitment as we went to the final in this competition last year and are in with a good shout again this year.

Junior B Hurlers await opponents for next round of championship.

Our Junior B Hurlers await the draw for the next round of the championship. However, we have four or five league games left to play and it is important that we finish out the league and keep up the momentum for the second team as management have done a lot of work this year.

Castlelyons men on Imokilly Panel.

Imokilly continued their preparations for the championship on Monday night with a game against Blackrock in Church Road. Both teams were missing players but overall it was a good game with victory going to the Candy Stripes. Again, a big crowd at the game as Cork is griped in hurling fever with a Cork selector on the Bank viewing the talent on show. Paudie O Sullivan was on fire as he showed some massive touches and scored three goals. Of our own lads Colm Barry and Niall O Leary were unable to be present but Tom Carroll was outstanding at corner back and Aidan O Sullivan got game time for most of the second half. Imokilly have requested to keep Monday evenings free the senior divisional team training and matches and hopefully we our divisional side will be in the shake up for the championship this year.
