Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 20.3.17. 2017-03-21 17:17:00

Junior Footballers in Championship action this Friday night.

Well lads the great rugby player Brian O Driscoll said in Independent Sport “Unless we give up gaelic football we’ll never be like the All Blacks”. He was one hardy boy in his day but what is he thinking now. Is he comparing our football to rugby or what! Well in either case we need the clubs to take a good interest in football in East Cork and we are off the mark in County football at present. So, no better way to start when we play Carrigtwohill in the first round of the East Cork Junior A football championship on Friday night at 8 pm in Killeagh. There is a lot expected of our lads as we were so unlucky against Cloyne in the final last year so let’s live up to it. We entered the East Cork league this year after a spell of championship only as we need more games, we have played two games in Division 3 drawing with St Catherines and our opponents on Friday, Carrigtwohill, who head the League table. This will be a tough one for us but we have good men all over the place and if they show any bit of form and spirit we will be hard to beat. Best of luck to Donal O Leary, his selectors and the team and please support the lads on Friday night.

U21 Footballers bow out of Championship.

Midleton 4-8 Castlelyons 1-3.

We travelled the short at journey to Páirc na Bríde on Sunday morning but defeat was our lot in the U21 football championship quarter final as Midleton were just too strong for us. However, we gave full value for money and it was only towards the end of the game that Midleton tacked on the few extra scores to kill of the contest.

As I mentioned last week this was a very young team as we had many minors with almost all the team left with three and four years in the U21 age group and more to come from the juvenile section there will be better days. What we need now is a bit of continuity and consistency and hopefully Donal Barry, Manager and his selectors James Maye and Larry Murphy with coach Colm Barry will stay with this team for next year. Of course, we have the hurling to come this year yet and we will be handy at this grade although lacking fellows on the age.

We played against the wind in the first half and done very well as Shane Flynn scored a goal and it was 1-0 to 0-7 in favour of Midleton at half time with one of our players getting a black card. In the second half, we were under a lot of pressure but again played with great spirit and it was only towards the end of the game that Midleton piled on the scores. Jack Barry came on as a sub returning after injury and done well. John Paul Murphy was outstanding in goal all through bring off some great saves and his kick outs were good too. We were missing Barry Murphy (inj), Ian O Riordan and Pierse Varner.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Conor McCarthy, James O Leary, Peter Roche, Jack Buckley, Shane Fenton, Mike Geary, Seamus Moroney, Declan Varner, Shane Moroney, Niall O Leary, Mark Spillane, Jack Ronayne, David Morrison, Shane Flynn. Subs: - Eoin O Neill, Cian Kearney, Mark Henley, Alex Henley, Jack Barry, Andrew O Neill, Seamus Morrison, Redmond Walsh.

Castlelyons play Kildorrery in Intermediate Hurling League on Sunday.

We are at home to table toppers Kildorrery at high noon on Sunday in a vital league game. This match up more or less determines our promotion chances for 2017 which is something we have missed out on the last few years and the end of March is too early to lose interest in the league. Kildorrery will be favourites in this game as they have won their two games against Castlemartyr and a big win over Meelin on a score of 2-12 to 0-8. However, we defeated Castlemartyr but drew with Aghada away in cracker and with a little more consistency we should match up to the North Cork men. Best of luck to our management team and players.

Cork Hurlers play Tipperary in last league game in Paírc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

When we think of hurling rivalry and greats who graced the fields surely a Cork v Tipp game is one of the greatest rivalries in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael. It all started in Buttevant in 1888 when Cork won by 2-2 to 0-0 in the Munster semi- final and this Sunday in Páirc Uí Rinn Cork with their tails up after a recent win over Waterford take on a Tipperary team in vein great vein of form too. This will be a run out for the championship between the same teams in a few weeks in Thurles. Cork must get into this game early and give them a reminder that they are on the way back and we wish the team and management and our own man Colm Spillane the best of luck. There should be some crowd so get there early and park well.
